Here are some basic gardening tips from our team at Green Landscape Supply in Norcross and Buford, GA.
Georgia has dense topsoil and clay that can be very compacted. Before planting, you need to loosen that soil and add the right nutrients to prepare your garden. In the early spring, garden soil should be loosened through rototilling first, then new soil added to enhance the nutrient level. We recommend our flower mix soil for both ground gardens and raised gardens. Add about two inches of flower mix to rototilled garden soil and till again to mix. For raised gardens, you can add up to six inches of flower mix soil on the top before planting.
Preparing your plot for sod is important for good results. It is important to remove large rocks and weeds before laying sod – you also want to complete aerating the soil before leveling the plot. For Bermuda or zoysia sod, leveling and rolling the plot is all that is needed, while fescue sod can benefit from adding planting soil like our flower mix.
Mulch protects the roots of your plants/trees and helps insulate them from the cold while reducing moisture loss. When first applying mulch to landscaped areas and gardens, you may need to add 2-4 inches of mulch the first two years. After a mulch layer is present, you can add an inch of mulch each year as it deteriorates. For sloped areas, shredded mulch can be best – pine mulch is too light and will not stay in place on hills and slopes. For play areas, choose cypress mulch, and use 4-6 inches and toss once a year, adding more as needed.
