If you are installing a new lawn, sod is an excellent solution. Unlike planting seed, you do not need to wait several weeks or months to enjoy the beauty of a new lawn. Sod comes in a variety of grass types in the Atlanta area, and warm-season grasses are the best option. The three most common grass types in our area are Bermuda, zoysia and fescue. At Green Landscape Supply, we offer all three in our sod products and can provide convenient sod delivery. To choose the best sod product for your new lawn, here are the main differences in our sod products.
Bermuda Sod
You will see Bermuda grass at many golf courses and parks in Atlanta due to its hearty nature. It thrives in direct sun and is drought-tolerant, which can help it withstand the hot summers. Bermuda grass is great for heavy foot traffic, and it can perform well in the clay soil. You can improve the health of your grass by adding sand for better drainage. If you have shady areas in your lawn, Bermuda sod may not be the best choice.
Zoysia Sod
Zoysia is also a warm-season grass that is drought-resistant and performs well in the Georgia climate. Like Bermuda, it can withstand the hot summers and fairs well under moderate foot traffic. Zoysia is very dense and is excellent for weed control. It is much more versatile than Bermuda, as it can thrive in direct sun and partially shaded areas, making it wonderful for residential lawns and commercial applications. Zoysia is also slow-growing, so it requires mowing less frequently.
Fescue
For those who want a green lawn year-round, fescue does not go dormant in the winter. You can enjoy a beautiful lawn all year, but this means it will also need year-round maintenance. Fescue sod will do well in areas with partial sun and soil with adequate drainage. While it does not have the natural drought-resistance and fortitude of zoysia and Bermuda, it can thrive if given the right environment and maintenance.
